Mission
Founded in 1947, the National Art Education Association is a nonprofit educational organization whose mission is to promote art education through professional development, service, advancement of knowledge, and leadership.
NAEA Publications
NAEA publishes award-winning "state-of-the-art" resources, in print and online, for K-12 visual arts teachers; university faculty in art education; arts researchers, librarians, and historians; museum and community arts educators; arts administrators; arts curriculum and standards developers; and arts education advocacy specialists/policy makers. All work is guided by NAEA's Strategic Plan.
We welcome your proposals for books, and we invite you to submit articles for NAEA's journals, newspapers, monographs, and other publications that reach a membership of over 24,000 art educators as well as the diverse community of education leaders from every field.
Books
Have an idea for a book for art educators? If you are ready to share your expertise, research/methodologies, approaches to studio pedagogy and strategies, and information about professional collaborations that may advance visual arts education perspectives for the education community at large, NAEA invites you to submit a book proposal to the Professional Materials Committee (PMC).
Your proposal package should include:
1. Title of proposed publication.
2. Abstract of no more than 500 words containing the central point, theme, and agenda.
3. Market analysis that include:
Description of the intended audience.
Significance of the work to the field of art education and its importance relative to existing literature.
Delineation of the difference between your proposed publication, other NAEA publications, and existing literature from other publishers. (Please refer to NAEA's Publications Catalog for categories and subjects.)
4.Complete outline of the proposed publication including:
List of authors (full name of each) and CVs.
Estimated length of publication.
Sample chapters or sections.
List and samples of graphic materials such as charts, tables, photographs, and illustrations.
Book Proposal Procedures
1. When your proposal package is received at NAEA, you will be notified, and it will be forwarded to the chair of NAEA's Professional Materials Committee (PMC).
2. Each proposal is carefully reviewed by a panel of five reviewers led by the PMC chair. Proposals are reviewed in timely fashion three times a year and acted upon by the NAEA Board at each scheduled meeting.
3. The PMC Chair reports recommendations to the NAEA Board-to accept a proposed publication, to accept it with requested changes, or not to publish.
4. Authors of recommended publications are engaged in conversations to answer the following questions:
Who is the primary audience for this book?
What specific audience and/or instructional levels of educators may use this book?
What marketing strategies are most important to promote this book to target audiences and other groups who could influence the success of this publication?
What influential decision makers or teachers should be provided with an advance copy of the book in order to generate favorable quotes for possible use on the book cover?
Can you recommend an experienced colleague for NAEA to contact for a critical review of the manuscript to share with the author prior to publication?
5. Proposals accepted for publication may require edits and changes. Note that NAEA publications follow the style guidelines set forth in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 5th edition (2001). Submissions after January 1, 2010 should follow guidelines of the 6th edition, available after July 1, 2009.
6. Authors of all proposals will be notified in writing of the Board's decision regarding the proposal. The Board makes all decisions concerning approval and budget allocation. NAEA makes all decisions concerning design, print run, and other details of the production process.
7. Because NAEA is a nonprofit organization and does not make payments to authors:
All editors and single book authors receive 7 complimentary copies of their publication.
All authors included in anthologies receive 2 complimentary copies.
NAEA supports authors' new books via in-house ads and reviews in NAEA publications and online listings, as well as book signings at the NAEA National Convention. NAEA also markets authors' books to other arts- and education-related organizations. Whenever possible, NAEA makes copies of the book and/or accompanying marketing materials available to NAEA member authors who are presenters at other education-related professional conferences.
| Please note: All proposals must be submitted in digital format in a Word document to kduse@arteducators.org. |
